WHAT IS A LIQUID PENETRANT INSPECTION?

Liquid Penetrant Testing is a type of Non Destructive Testing that detects surface imperfections in non-porous materials in both metallic and non-metallic materials.

This type of test basically consists of the application of a liquid with high wetting power on the surface of the material to be tested. Thanks to the capillary effect, it will penetrate the discontinuities.

Finally, the surplus remaining on the surface will be removed by a suitable cleaning system and the subsequent application of a developer will be able to extract the liquid that was previously trapped in the discontinuities, showing the location of the discontinuities.

THE LIQUID PENETRANT INSPECTION TECHNIQUES THAT WE EMPLOY

The techniques we employ are very varied. Specifically, depending on the phase we are in, they are as follows:

    • Visible / Fluorescent.
    • Penetrants removable with water / Removable with solvents / Post-emulsifiable.
    • Dry / Wet Developers.
    • Special applications.

    ADVANTAGES OF THESE TESTS

Liquid Penetrant Testing has a number of advantages:

    • The results are obtained almost immediately and are easy to interpret.
    • They are not limited to ferromagnetic materials such as Magnetic Particle tests.
    • The method is relatively simple, being easy to perform in the field.
    • They can be applied to both large and small samples.
    • No special equipment is required.
